The largest city in Kitsap County, Bremerton, Washington has an estimated population of 39,251 as of 2012. Located right on the Kitsap Peninsula, it is also surrounded by the Sinclair Inlet and the Straight of Port Orchard. In fact, the city is divided right down the middle by the Port Washington Narrows. Of the 32.29 square miles that make up the city, roughly 3.88 square miles is water. Because of Bremerton’s close proximity to water, it is also the home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as well as the Bremerton Annex of Naval Base Kitsap. The Navy established the shipyard here in 1891 after having determined that the land, which was protected by the Sinclair and Dyes inlets, would make for the best site for a shipyard in the Pacific Northwest. A German immigrant named William Bremer recognized that the establishment of the Navy shipyard would provide an immense amount of business, so he purchased land around the area that would eventually become the city of Bremerton.

Shopping and Dining

Residents of Bremerton will find that there is no shortage of restaurants and shopping opportunities. In addition to recognizable chain restaurants, there are plenty of local options to choose from, including classic American-style joints such as Noah’s Ark Restaurant and Hi-Lo’s 15th St. Café. Additional choices are La Fermata, Northwest-style Italian cuisine, Juanito’s Taco Shop and Boogaloo’s Bar-B-Que.

Big-name stores in the area include Target, TJ Maxx, Fred Meyer, Dollar Tree and Walmart. There are also many local stores and shops such as Sweet Deal, Garguile’s Red Apple MarketThe Candy Shoppe, just to name a few. Additional shopping is available at the Kitsap Mall in neighboring Silverdale and downtown Seattle is within an hour.

Parks and Recreation

Bremerton real estate is located in a naturally beautiful area of Washington, which means that there is no shortage of stunning parks to visit with both family and friends. There are between 20 and 30 parks available to check out in the area, including Bachmann Park, Blueberry Park, Forest Ridge Park, Kitsap Lake Park and Jarstad Park, to name a few. Many of these parks contain trails to hike on, playgrounds for children, picnic tables for family picnics and more. The award winning Gold Mountain Golf Club is open to the general public every day. The Bremerton Senior Center provides a wealth of activities including fitness and dance classes, sports, arts and crafts and more. Bremerton is also home to the Puget Sound Naval Museum.

According to 2010 Census data, Bremerton contains around 17,273 housing units with a homeownership rate of 41.1 percent. The average household in Bremerton between 2008 and 2012 contained 2.37 persons and had an average income of roughly $40,644. As of August 2013, the unemployment rate in Bremerton stands at 7.5 percent, which is just barely above the national unemployment rate of 7.3 percent. However, the unemployment rate in Bremerton has been slowly declining over the last year and is expected to continue to do so. One of the larger sources of employment in the area is the Navy shipyard. The Bremerton Chamber of Commerce has more comprehensive information on businesses and employers in the area.

Schools, Health and Transportation

The Bremerton School District provides education to roughly 5,000 students. The school district is comprised of 11 different schools that include four elementary schools, one early learning center, one elementary STEM academy, one middle school, one high school, two alternative high schools and the Alliance Academy. There are also a number of pre-schools, a performing arts center and the West Sounds Technical Skills Center.

Two hospitals, Harrison Medical Center and the Naval Hospital, provide standard healthcare as well as emergency care for residents in Bremerton and the surrounding area. The Doctor’s Clinic (TDC) and Group Health both offer primary car and urgent care service that may not require a trip to the emergency room. Primary care and other services are available through a variety of practices throughout the city.

Kitsap Transit provides bus service throughout Bremerton with stops at downtown Bremerton, the Naval Shipyard and the Washington State Ferry Terminal. Public ferry services help connect residents of Bremerton to downtown Seattle. Domestic and international flights are available at Sea-Tac Internation Airport.
